Canvas Photo Frame & Link Up Party

I cherish my art supplies to the core. Inspite of all the relocating and packing, I ensure that non of it goes waste. Around Sanket's birthday (yup! that's months back... but I told y'all here that I am working on publishing the posts that have been lying in Drafts ), I found an old canvas. This poor little thing had traveled from Michigan to Virginia to North Carolina and in the process, it suffered some wear and tear, making it unsuitable for painting.

Being the hoarder that I am, my heart would have popped out, if I had to throw it away. Thankfully, I thought of something else. I thought of THIS!

As you can tell, it was an easy and quick project that started off with marking where the photo had to be stuck. Next, I painted the border using black oil paint. (That happened to be the only color I had, apart from white, at that point of time). Next, I tapped the tube directly on the canvas, applying light pressure on the tube after every couple of taps, to create texture.

As I write this post, the photo frame sits right before my eyes on the 'gadget-shelf'! Oh yes, we have one with that name in our house ;) ;)

India Festival, Charlotte

I was at the India Festival in Charlotte, yesterday. The few hours spent there, sprouted so many thoughts that I had to transfer it on the blog to make some room in my head for other things.

Let me start with the 'mahool' (translation: ambiance). The streets that house the tallest buildings of Charlotte city looked no different than an Indian mela-maidaan (translation: fairground). The stalls on both sides of the road and the stage right under the BoA building, restricted traffic in the downtown for two days.

Beautiful sarees, lehengas and anarkalis that adorned the streets!
The gentlemen in kurtas, did not go unnoticed either.
But it was the smile on every face that ruled the roads.

As I walked towards the epicenter of fun, guided by the loud music, I could feel a gush of excitement inside. The Bollywood numbers had already got me into the celebration mood. The stalls with beautiful Indian wears and sparkling jewelry called my name out loud but I ignored and paced towards the food stalls.

Indian food on the streets!! Now that is what I miss about not being in India. Street food! Who cares about hygiene when the taste buds crave to be satisfied.

The rush to reach the cashier, the rubbing of shoulders, some being 'ignorant' of queues, others being too occupied to apologize after bumping into another, no 'thanks-sorry-please', no cordial smiles... Some how, it did not bother me today! It just felt informal. Not indecent. It reminded me of people back home and their ways! It was amusing :)

And then there were these Indian-origin kids with impeccable American accent, dancing on Bollywood songs! I am not sure how often they visit India and I doubt that they use only Hindi at home but their lip-sync was perfect. Their 'latke-jhatke-thumke' (translation: dance moves) were just as good as Hrithik & Madhuri's and for today, they looked more Indian than international.

The non-Indians were seen to enjoy just as much. Relishing the flavors of India and thumping their feet to the music, they blended perfectly with the crowd.

Apart from a few, I knew nobody but they were not strangers. There was a bond between us- the Motherland Bond! We were out there celebrating being Indians, on foreign soil.

I never miss a chance to pull out my Indian wears!

It's amazing how we draw comfort from the presence of fellow-countrymen, when we are miles away from home. A visit to the temple, connects us with our culture. The availability of Indian grocery saath-samundar-paar, makes life easier. Celebrating Holi-Diwali-Eid-Onam-Lohri brings us all together. Living away from home is not easy but we have managed to build little-Indias around us and have learned to happily adopt the foreign land as home.

Isn't it true for Indians around the globe? Or, for that matter, immigrants world wide? We are a new race. We are the 'People of the World', who build homes where ever they go, embrace cultures and befriend strangers!

Cheers to the harmony that remains untouched by communal hatred!! May it spread and prevail till eternity!

Not READY to Part

It was movie day for us yesterday and my choice of genre won over sci-fi. Yay!! We randomly chose 'The Memory Book'. It turned out to be just the kind of cinema I appreciate. Romantic Drama!

At one point in the movie, the lead characters, Gabe and Chloe reach Gabe's childhood house that is up for sale. The two of them look around and Gabe is flooded with memories of the days when he lived in that house with his parents- his dad sitting on his favorite chair listening to the radio, mom making pancakes and a lot more.

This instantly reminded me of my childhood house. Home it was in true sense! It is currently rented out and we, as family often find ourselves discussing it's fate. Sell it? Keep it? Continue renting? Move in? We have not reached a decision yet but selling it off is something none of us can come to terms with.

That Place Called HOME

The small house, that felt cramped up when guests arrived with their big bags, is where we have created memories. Zillions of them! The birthday parties, playing 'house', the computer cabinet, the run to the entrance to avoid being the last one, the streets on which we played Badminton & Red Letter and hurt our knees almost every other day, the shelves that hardly ever saw a rearrangement, the friends, the upgrades in electronics that we saw, the mastered art of making the best use of every little corner, the creaking sound of the gates, the overflowing of water from tanks, the hibiscus and papaya and guava trees, the green wooden swing, the chair in which my sister and I would sit together and watch Lauren-and-Hardy on cold Sunday mornings, the living room that Mom decorated and re-decorated, all the customization in which Dad takes pride even till date... the place that was our kingdom!

I still remember the last time I was there and I have no clue when I'll get back there but one thing's for sure... I am not READY to part with the house that has been my home!

Feeling 'Artsy-Craftsy' & An Announcement!

After all these years of maintaining this little space in the CyberWorld, I have identified a blogging pattern that I have been following (pretty much unintentionally). After days of frequent posts, sneak in 'silent days'. I just disappear all together for weeks. Then, one fine day, the over-coat of laziness is shed and I make a comeback with an artsy-craftsy post!

And today, I am gonna do just that- Make a comeback with a colorful post!!

This painting is far from being latest. I made it months back- 3 months back!
Somehow, the pictures clicked back then, did not do just to the painting or at least I felt so; hence, the delay. By the way, I still don't feel very good about these pictures. Those of you, who have seen it in person would know and for all the others, here is more of my most random artwork.

Just like the trend I talked about right at the start of the post, there is another blogging habit that I have developed over the period of time and that is- to keep posts in 'Draft' forever. I hope to get them all published sooner or later but for now, this painting is the lucky one to be pulled out of the drafts and see the light of being published.

Hope you like it!!
